Spartans Ranked Top 10 in Nation
In only 2 short seasons, the Spartans have gone from unranked and winless, to ranked 10th in the nation in D1AA. That’s quite an achievement and a testament not only to the hard work of the players, but of the excellent coaching staff led by head coach Nick Schlobohm and assisted by coaches Hayden Warneke...

San Jose State Rugby Remains atop D1AA North Conf
San Jose State remains atop the California D1AA North conference after a very convincing 72-3 victory over San Francisco State. The Spartans ran in 12 tries but it took some work as SFSU battled hard throughout the game as they continue to take forward steps. SJSU started off hot but was able to also maintain...

LEARN MOREABOUT MEN'S RUGBY

Founded in 1971, the SJSU Men's Rugby Club is one of the oldest on campus.

The men’s rugby club shares its storied history with the San Jose Seahawks, our local DII Men’s rugby club. Both clubs were founded the same year in 1971 and even shared charter members. Both clubs celebrated their half-centennial anniversaries this year! The latest addition to the SJSU rugby family is the wildly successful SJSU Women’s Rugby program, which has achieved national recognition in both their 7s and 15s programs.

Next Phase Rugby

The next level for Spartan rugby recruiting is to enlist the service of Next Phase Rugby, a national rugby recruiting service that connects players with prospective teams across the nation. Thanks to one of our alumni, the team has now created its profile and is ready to receive transfers and new enrollees.

ALUMNI TESTIMONIALS

The SJSU Men's and Women's Rugby clubs have been providing quality competition for decades, each season producing not only a great rugby experience, but athletes who love the game. Hear from some of our alumni.

I found my passion for rugby playing at SJSU. I’m now in my 38th rugby season, and I still run into former SJSU teammates who, like me, still coach.

San Jose State women’s Rugby was the best part of my college experience. James Fonda and I recreated the program into the Women of Sparta and am extremely proud of where it is now. I currently serve as the commissioner for the conference and am a proud sponsor for the program. This program has opened up many doors for me including playing rugby after college, working at international events hosted by the U.S. and networking. From playoffs to nationals, this program holds near and dear to my heart.

After playing multiple sports in high school, I joined the Rugby my freshman year.  I was instantly captivated by Rugby and the college club sport scene.  I was able to travel throughout California competing and building amazing relationships that I still have today.  Being team captain, club president and eventually asst. coach, it gave me a variety of experiences, tools & skills to be successful in sports management and in life.  I am still involved with the alumni group and love supporting the current club at State.

FORMER WOMEN'S TEAM HEAD COACHVIRGINIA PUCCIO

I coached SJSU Women’s Rugby from 2003 to 2008. It was my first of many coaching experiences and it was meaningful for me. There are so many life lessons you learn from playing team sports. And I started as a young assistant coach and really learned a lot about myself and about leadership, beyond what I learned as a team sport player. SJSU Rugby will always hold a special place in my heart.

When I was a player at SJSU, we had our struggles as a team, but we never quit and I literally made some of the best friends I ever had. Despite the losses, I view my time there as a victory because it started this lifelong obsession and 20 year playing career. I regret nothing!!! SPARTANS!!! Also, I was the guy that got us doing the battle cry. That is a FACT!

San Jose State rugby has been a crucial part in my development as an adult. The experiences in the program taught to me endure, persevere, and to value relationships and team work. Life is difficult and one of the only guarantees is that throughout, there will be difficult times. During those times in my life I pushed through, as rugby players do.
